Meeting CONFOREST - IEFC: The debate!

Following the request done by the members of the EFI project CONFOREST regarding the objective study of the conversion of regular coniferous forests into forests closer to nature, several members of the IEFC have travelled to Freeburg to defend the advantages of the cultivated forest, even if intensively cultivated.
After a field tour in the black forest, in the middle of the irregular fir-spruces forest, there were two days of intensive work in Freeburg, divided between the research centre Baden Württemberg and the University of Freeburg.
About forty people participated on this event which was developed on three stages:

  • A series of presentations with a partisan of the conversion and a opponent,
  • A series of round tables to identify the fundamental notions of the debate,
  • A session dedicated to the outputs of the discussions with the workgroups and its synthesis.
On each of these stages the following subjects were evoked: forest production, inventories, foresthealth, biodiversity, soil and water, economy.
Several arguments in favour of the sustainable management of the cultivated forests were illustrated that are being developed within the framework of the project FORSEE
This meeting will be published as a “discussion paper” by the EFI until the end of this year.
