Capsis : Computer-Aided Projection for Strategies In Silviculture

A software platform for forestry modellers

The capsis project has been developed in France since 1994 by INRA. The Capsis project aims at integrating several types of forest growth and dynamics models - stand models, distance independent or spatially explicit tree models... - and providing forest management tools to establish and compare different silvicultural scenarios.
The objective is to build a perennial, open and dynamic software platform:
  1. to contribute to the development of models and test their sensitivity to some parameters by simulating the manager's actions,
  2. to share tools and methods,
  3. to compare results of different models,
  4. to transfer models to the managers
  5. to serve as teaching material.
The current release of Capsis, named Capsis4, has been developed in the AMAP laboratory since 1999 . It now contains about 25 models of different types: mainly distance-independent tree models and individual tree models, but also mix models.

An increasing amount of tree growth, stand yield and other forest related models implemented

Most models implemented in Capsis are described in a web database hosted by the European Institute for Cultivated Forest (www.iefc.net) (see also the table in this page).
Capsis is support for various projects in the forestry and agroforestry fields and extensions to other scientific fields are discussed at the present time with all the partners.
