Abstract With the accelerating growth of log home construction across the USA, the National Association of Home Builders Log Homes Council conducted a comprehensive review of the available studies that document log homes' energy efficiency and thermal mass benefits to help improve understanding in the construction codes and HVAC [humidification, ventilation and air conditioning] engineering community. The steady-state calculation of the R-value (measure of the building materials' resistance to heat flow over the thickness of the material) and U-factors (overall system thermal effectiveness) is discussed. Data are tabulated on the correction factors for walls having sufficient heat capacity that are now accepted in the International Energy Conservation Code, and connected codes such as the International Residential Code. The method to properly calculate the thermal mass correction for log walls is described. Equations used to calculate the overall thermal transmittance for walls, from its component parts, and for the calculation of the construction materials' heat capacity, are presented. Finally, an example is given of correcting log wall calculations for thermal mass.
